Learn about quantitative design in God's creation and develop skills to describe logical, physical, financial, and scientific phenomena from expert mathematicians. The applied mathematics major is designed to meet the increasing need for mathematicians in areas of science and technology and to prepare you for further graduate study in mathematics.
of seniors felt their major encouraged critical thinking
of Northwestern’s applied mathematics graduates are professionally employed
of seniors feel prepared to integrate their faith with their academic field
Students learn mathematical concepts like the infinite, dimension, and mathematical certainty while seeking to know the mind of an orderly Creator. We also investigate how faith has shaped the development of quantitative disciplines.
At Northwestern, you will use applied and theoretical mathematics to solve quantitative problems in business, government, and technology while developing new mathematical tools and ideas. You will learn from professors with professional expertise, like a former statistician for the state of Ohio and a globally accomplished engineer with numerous patents.
Here you can participate in local, regional, national, and international mathematics competitions.
You can also attend and present your work at local and national conferences. Our Alpha Center is available if you would like to sharpen your math skills and tutor other students who are completing general education mathematics courses.
Our graduates are well poised for applying their knowledge and skills in careers related to financial mathematics, computer technologies, mathematics research, mathematics teaching, statistics, and scientific analysis. With campus so close to downtown Minneapolis and St. Paul, students can take advantage of opportunities in Minnesota’s thriving business and math industries.
If you know that numbers matter, enjoy thinking in an abstract manner, and want a career using your mathematical talents, this might be the right degree for you.
You will learn to analyze, think critically, and solve problems.

My education at Northwestern has greatly prepared me to show people how God works in mathematics - from Fractal Geometry, to the concept of Infinity, and so much more. The kindness and faithfulness I have seen from my Professors during my time at UNW has really inspired me to continue chasing after and learning about God's creation while studying in a STEM field.
Professors at Northwestern are focused on their students first. Our faculty include experts in their respective fields who want to help you grow in your faith while you earn your degree.
